Tilicho Lake Trek in the Annapurna Region of Nepal is an unforgettable adrenaline experience. The ultimate destination of our trek is the Tilicho Lake which is one of the highest lakes in the world situated at 4,919 meters (16,138 feet). This magnificent lake surrounded by mountains solidifies its natural setting. Nestled amidst towering mountains, this serene lake looks magnificent which is why in the trekking season the trail gets flooded with numerous domestic as well as international tourists.
Besides its natural grandeur, the Tilicho lake is considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists due to legends. The majority of Hindus come to this lake for spiritual reasons. Therefore, trekking to Tilicho Lake is often considered a pilgrim trip in Nepal’s Annapurna region. In the same way, we can experience engaging with locals and their warm hospitality on the trail while trekking to Tilicho Lake. The treks also expose you to various wildlife like Thars, Blue Sheep, and many beautiful birds that amuse you with their songs during your walk. We will be trekking along varying altitudes to reach Tilicho Lake and hence we shall be able to see varying environments as well as diverse flora and fauna. Our route heads through forests that change from subtropical to alpine as we begin our journey and reach the ultimate destination. From blooming Rhododendron and Oak forests (especially in the Spring) to the alpine meadows and Yak pastures, we can experience it all. Whereas, being in the Annapurna Conservation Area, it is required to have the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit for trekking in Tilicho.
The Tilicho lake is created by the melting glaciers on the northern slope of Annapurna Mountain and Thorong Peak. Therefore, the trekking itinerary of Tilicho Lake adjoins the Annapurna Circuit Trail to some extent. Mostly in the initial part of the trail, we will be walking thru the popular Annapurna Circuit Trek trail to reach Tilicho Lake.
Some trekkers often include Tilicho Lake as a side trip during Round Annapurna Trekking. Travelers encounter the key features of both treks during their expedition, including the renowned Thorong La Pass, which stands at an elevation of 5,416 meters (17,669 feet). This journey encompasses all essential elements, ranging from the verdant terraced rice fields in the lowland foothills of the Himalayas to the breathtaking alpine scenery adorned with glistening snow-capped peaks.
While we embark on our journey to Tilicho Lake, the trail meanders through a combination of pine and oak forests before ascending to steeper terrains, preparing adventurers for what lies ahead. As the journey progresses, it becomes progressively tender as expansive hillsides come into view, contrasting with the rugged high mountain faces.
Our Tilicho Lake Trek usually begins from Besisahar which is the doorway of Annapurna region. We will then continue our journey following the Annapurna Circuit route until we reach Manang. The trail from Manang then swings to the east past Khangsar Village and on into Tilicho Base Camp. Trekkers coming here often relax at the lake and then usually move on back to Manang or over Thorong La Pass, as this is where they turn off from Annapurna Circuit. In most of the Tilicho Lake itinerary, after reaching Khangsar, your next adventure takes you to Tilicho Base Camp and Tilicho Lake.
At Tilicho Base Camp, you’ll find yaks roaming and lush pastures, and you can get there by crossing the Khangsar River. Tilicho Lake is perched at 4919m, and while the surrounding terrain can be a bit tricky, it’s all part of the thrill. Near Tilicho is a high pass known as Mesokanto La. This high-altitude trek with an invigorating view of diverse landscapes, includes the hospitality of locals and the Himalayas. We can also consider a side trip to the pass and include another thrilling experience in our venture.
From Tilicho, you’ll keep climbing until you reach the top of Thorong La Pass. Next, you’ll head to Muktinath, a revered site for both Hindu and Buddhist followers. Finally, you’ll trek to Jomsom, where you’ll catch a flight back to Pokhara. However, the itinerary can be tweaked and we can change the route accordingly. In general, the itinerary of the Tilicho Lake trek ranges from 12-20 days depending on the route and pace. Whereas, it is important to consider spending sufficient time for acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness and make the trekking safe, and enjoyable.
Best Time to trek to Tilicho lake is considered to be the month of April through June and September-November. During this time, the weather is generally stable and the skies are clear which provides an amazing view of mountains and surrounding landscapes. The temperatures are moderate, which makes trekking conditions a lot more comfortable.
