Overview

Nepal is a country renowned worldwide for its highest peaks and richest culture. Being blessed with marvelous nature and incomparable culture, Nepal has many trekking options. Among numerous trekking destinations in Nepal, Rara Lake is one special and remote trekking spot. Located in the remote part of Nepal within the Rara National Park, the Rara Lake is a hidden gem of Nepal. It is also the largest lake in Nepal despite being situated in a small yet diversified Rara National Park.

Despite being the smallest national park in Nepal, the Rara National Park is home to plentiful unique biodiversity and cultural heritage sites. We can spot many rare and extinct birds and mammals along with herbs and vegetation during a trek to Rara. It is a paradise for the nature lover and wildlife fanatics. Being situated within Rara National Park, trekkers will need to obtain Rara National Park Permit for trekking in Rara Lake. We, at Nepal Mountain Guide will do the required procedure and arrange the permits before you embark on the trek.

As the largest lake in Nepal, Rara Lake is an attraction for eco-tourists who are drawn by its rich vegetation and wildlife. Trekking to Rara Lake is a journey that offers an unforgettable experience through beautiful landscapes, warm-hearted locals, and a deep connection with nature. The snow-covered mountains and green forests around Rara Lake form a magnificent scene that beats the hearts of all who see the trekkers. The places included within the Rara Lake Trek itinerary offer chances to happenstance with birds and animal species that one can rarely ever get to see.

The Rara Lake Trek requires a couple of domestic flights as it is located in an isolated section of Nepal. From Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then again to Jumla, we will have a scenic and adventurous aviation experience before the trek. Starting from the remote village of Jumla, trekkers navigate through one of the most challenging but equally rewarding treks that meanders between alpine meadows, pine forests, and traditional villages until we reach Rara Lake. We can experience the change in ecosystem with the terraced farmlands to alpine pastures where the wildflowers paint the landscape with colors. The trek up to our ultimate destination provides vantage points that offer picturesque vistas of the surrounding peaks including Api and Saipal.

Rara Lake Trek is not only about the natural wonders, it also allows you to explore the local culture. We can interact with the locals and explore their way of life. The region’s cultural heritage is seen in its traditional dress, local handicrafts, ancient customs, and of course, the settlements with traditional houses and history that dates back to ancient times. And if we make it coincide with the local festivity, it would be a cherry on the top. Get in touch with us to plan your Rara Lake Trek to experience the most of its cultural aspects along with its natural splendor.

To go on a Rara Lake trek the best time to start is in the autumn months of September to November when the temperature is mild and the skies are clear which offers an unobstructed view of the magnificent mountain scenery. Whereas, the Spring months between March and May are also a good time to visit Rara Lake, as the blooming rhododendrons will add more vibrancy to the trekking route. Nevertheless, though monsoon trekking has its own significance, the monsoon season shall be avoided for Rara Trek because of heavy rainfall and probable landslides along the trail.
