Overview

Mohare Danda Trek is and short and off-the-beaten-path trek in the Annapurna region which is a newly introduced and less popular trek from Pokhara. It is a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural experience located in a gorge between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs. Along the way, you will see tranquil villages, lush rhododendron forests, and terraced farmlands with stunning sweeping vistas of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Mountain ranges. Mohare Danda Trek is an ideal choice for hikers looking for less crowded trails that offer a comparable trekking experience in terms of both scenery and culture to popular routes like Ghorepani Poon Hill.

Also known as the Annapurna Dhaulagiri Community Trail or Eco Community Lodge Trek, the trail was conceptualized and familiarized by Mahabir Pun. Pun is a well-known researcher, educator, social entrepreneur, and activist from Nepal best known for leading the Nepal Wireless Networking Project, which uses wireless technology to develop remote Himalayan communities. When he commercially pioneered this trail, it was named “Community Eco-Lodge Trek”.

With the introduction of this trekking, he inspired the Mohare Danda region of Nepal to establish a system of homestay community lodges maintained by locals. Hence, the Mohare Danda Trek is also known for its community-based tourism model where local lodges and tea houses are run by the villagers. This unique initiative not only provides trekkers with an authentic experience but also supports the local economy and promotes sustainable tourism in the region.

The Mohare Danda Trek is great for nature enthusiasts and those looking for a quiet hike away from busy trails. You will walk through stunning rhododendron woods, terraced farms, and lovely villages, all while taking in wide views of the Himalayas. It provides breathtaking views of the Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, and Dhaulagiri Mountain ranges, along with chances to see some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets in the Himalayas, with the sun’s golden light shining on the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhre mountains. The path leads through lovely villages where the Magar and Gurung communities live, allowing you to enjoy the friendly hospitality and rich culture of the locals. A major highlight of the trek is reaching Mohare Danda, a ridge at 3,300 meters, which gives you wide views of over 30 peaks, including some of Nepal’s tallest mountains. This trail is less commercialized than others in the Annapurna area, making it perfect for those who want to connect with nature and escape the crowds.

The Mohare Danda Trek itinerary usually lasts between 5 to 7 days varying upon the starting point, the routes, overnight stays, the pace of walk, and other factors. Generally, we organize the trek with a scenic flight or drive to Pokhara and begin the trek in the beautiful city of Pokhara. A short drive from Pokhara will take you to Galeshwar or Beni, which is where the actual trek starts. In the first few days of Mohare Danda Trek, we will pass through quiet villages like Bans Kharka and Nangi, walking through terraced fields and forests filled with rhododendrons. These early days are quite easy with basic hiking trails that offer many chances to meet locals and learn about Magar culture.

As you climb higher, the trail leads to Mohare Danda, the trek’s highest point. Here, you will enjoy stunning 360-degree views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Mountain ranges. Watching the sunrise from Mohare Danda is a memorable part of the trek, as the morning light brightens the snow-covered peaks. After enjoying the views at Mohare Danda, the trek goes down through peaceful villages like Tikot and Tiplyang, providing more chances to experience the local culture and explore the beautiful scenery. The trek ends with a drive back to Pokhara, where you can relax by the lake and think about your journey. Nevertheless, the Mohare Danda Trek itinerary can be customized and alternated according to the requirements of the trekkers.

Similar to most treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal, we will require two permits to trek in the Mohare Danda. As the trail within our Mohare Danda itinerary abodes in the Annapurna Conservation Area,  the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) is a must. The ACAP Permit is crucial for trekking in the Annapurna region which is issued to conserve nature, flora, and fauna, and support local conservation. Whereas, a Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card is also required to trek in the region ensuring trekkers’ safety.

Mohare Danda Trek is best done in the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) like most of the treks in Nepal. It is when the weather is usually clear and the sights are spectacular so we recommend planning the trek either in the Spring or Autumn months. However, trekking to Mohare Danda is also doable during other seasons as well if you have experience and sufficient preparation. If you would be planning the trek in Summer or Monsoon, the trail might be slippery and prone to landslides due to heavy rainfall so it is essential to be extra-cautious and prepared. On the other hand, the winter trek to Mohare Danda is still worthwhile but the sceneries might be obscured and the temperature could be chilly, mostly during nighttime.

At Nepal Mountain Guide, we handle all permits and logistics, allowing you to focus on your adventure. Our experienced guides prioritize your safety and comfort, providing personalized service and managing everything from permits to eco-lodge bookings. We emphasize sustainable tourism, ensuring your trek benefits the local community and environment. Hence, contact our team today to plan this short and worthwhile trek in the Mohare Danda.
