Overview

Mardi Himal Trek is a newly discovered trekking trail in the Annapurna region of Nepal which is very popular among tourists within a short time. It is one of the most beautiful short and easy trekking trails in Nepal with fewer crowds and moderate difficulty. The trekking trails are peaceful and serene with much fewer trekkers than in the popular trekking routes like Annapurna Base Camp or Everest Base Camp Trek. However, with the growing popularity of this trek, you can certainly find a significant amount of companions including domestic as well as international tourists along the trail.

The stunning views of the Himalayas are one of the main attractions of the Mardi Himal Trek. We will be blessed with eye-dazzling views of the Mardi Himal, Mt. Machapuchare, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and the neighboring peaks as we trek towards Mardi Base Camp. The viewpoints along our Mardi Trekking trail are an ideal location for taking pictures, showcasing the breathtaking splendor of the snow-capped peaks against the clear blue sky.

Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek starts from Pokhara city with a diverse range of Mardi trekking itineraries depending upon the preferences of trekkers. However, the most common itinerary of Mardi Trek originates from Khande village, which is less than an hour’s drive from Pokhara. Along the way, we will be passing through several traditional Gurung and Magar villages where we can interact with the cheerful and welcoming locals and experience their lifestyle and culture in depth. Therefore, the trek to the Mardi Himal also offers a deep cultural insight besides the incredible natural wonders. At the tea houses and the overnight destinations after our ascents and descents, we can experience traditional Nepalese delicacies and discover the local customs and traditions. If we schedule our Mardi Himal Trek accordingly, we can also be part of the celebration of their local festivals.

En route to Mardi Himal Base Camp, we will trek through dense forests, mostly Rhododendrons of various colors which bloom during spring, taking us to the fields with alpine vegetation as we keep gaining altitude. As the trekking trails are part of the Annapurna Conservation Area, the Mardi Himal Trekking trail is rich in flora and fauna which makes this trek a paradise for nature lovers. If we are lucky, we can also encounter wildlife such as Himalayan Thar and Musk Deer during our Mardi Himal Trek along with numerous bird species that are rare and extinct. Being in the conservation area, trekking to Mardi will require having the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit along with TIMs Card. You can obtain these documents in Kathmandu or Pokhara thru a registered trekking operator like Nepal Mountain Guide.

Mardi trekking is a perfect option for trekkers wanting to experience the beauty of the Himalayas in a peaceful and serene location without much physical strenuousness. Mardi Himal Trek takes us to the base camp of Mardi Himal at the maximum altitude of 4,500 meters through untouched landscapes, lush forests, and traditional villages. En route to the Mardi Himal Base Camp, we can get stunning views of the Annapurna range, including the majestic Machapuchare – the Fishtail Mountain. This is a moderate difficulty trek in the Annapurna Trekking region of Nepal with daily walking hours ranging from 5 to 7 hours. Therefore, the Mardi Himal Trek is a beginner-friendly trek in Nepal with rewarding scenery and cultural insights. However, it is very important to be physically and mentally sound along with proper preparation for a safe and successful venture.

To trek in the Mardi Himal, it is best to plan the trip during March to May in the spring season to witness marvelous nature along with blooming Rhododendron Forest. The skies are also clear and it is favorable to walk during such weather. Also, the months from September to November in the fall are very much recommended for the Mardi Himal Trek. During the Autumn month, the weather is stable with clear blue sky and offering the vivid vistas of the mountains. Likewise, the temperature is also moderate, making the trek more comfortable and festivals like Dashain and Tihar also fall within this season. However, for an experienced trekker, trekking to Mardi Himal during monsoon is also worthwhile if you can tackle the slippery trails and of course, the leeches. Similarly, trekking to Mardi during winter is also not a bad idea besides the trail being chilly with snowfall and the sceneries mostly obscured.

In a nutshell, Mardi Himal Trek is an amazing trip in Nepal with a mixed taste of adventure, natural splendor, cultural richness, and scenic beauty of Nepal. Being a moderate difficulty trek, which can be accomplished within a short duration of time, anyone with a significant amount of fitness can accomplish Mardi Himal Trek, despite their prior experience. The trail climbs for about 1.5 hours to the Australian Camp (2,060 m), a scenic spot offering panoramic views of the Annapurna range and the Pokhara Valley. From there, the trail continues through a rhododendron forest to Deurali, nestled between Annapurna South and Mardi Himal, overlooking the Modi Khola gorge.
Day 2

Trek to Low Camp (3 hours)

The trail follows a ridge, gradually climbing through rhododendron trees. Low Camp offers a few tea houses in a forest clearing, with closer views of Mt. Fishtail and Mardi Himal. The clear blue skies and sweeping views of the southern valley make this a picturesque stop. Optional: With your guide's agreement, you can trek an additional hour to Badal Danda (Cloud Hill) above the treeline, which has a single lodge.

The trail ascends further toward Mardi Himal and Mt. Fishtail. Leaving the tree line at Badal Danda, you’ll enter a shrubby alpine forest. High Camp, located on a small pasture with three lodges, is where you’ll spend the night above the clouds, close to the towering mountains.
