Overview

Manaslu Circuit Trek is an opportunity to encircle the eighth-highest mountain in the world, Mt. Manaslu (8,163 meters). Manaslu, aka Kutang in the local language, is the 8th highest mountain in the world, and it lies within the Mansiri Himal of the Nepalese Himalayas. Derived from the Sanskrit word that translates to “Mountain of the Spirit”, the Manaslu mountain is tremendous. Encircling this awe-inspiring mountain, walking through the settlements with the picturesque scenery of Manaslu ranges in the backdrop while dwelling on the rich history and cultural insight, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is an experience of a lifetime. It is a tour of an unparalleled natural beauty kingdom.

Nestled in the heart of Nepal, the Manaslu Circuit trekking route offers a captivating blend of pristine landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and a thrilling challenge for adventurers of all levels. It is like entering another world untouched by modernity as we begin this extraordinary journey following our Manaslu Circuit Trek itinerary. We will be surrounded by snowcapped peaks, spectacular waterfalls, dense rhododendron forests, and peaceful hamlets during our trek. Since the Manaslu region has not been spoiled by mass tourism, it has retained its traditional charm appealing with its simple lifestyle.

Our Manaslu Circuit Trek commences with a gradual ascent through terraced farmlands, where the scent of ripening crops fills the air. As we gain altitude, the landscape transforms into a tapestry of verdant forests teeming with diverse flora and fauna. The trail winds its way through charming villages, each with its own unique character and warm hospitality. Encountering locals going about their daily lives provides a glimpse into the simple yet fulfilling existence of the mountain people.

Precisely, from Kathmandu, our journey will start with a drive to Machha Khola. And our actual trekking to the Manaslu begins as we start to hike from Machakhola. We will be ascending and descending along the trail passing through beautiful scenic landscapes of the region. En route, we will walk thru several cultural settlements like Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Lho (3180m), Samagaun (3500m), Samdo and then to Dharamsala. We will be experiencing the local culture and lifestyle which is influenced by Tibetan Buddhism mingled with Nepali typical existence. There are several monasteries and chortens along with prayer flags adorned beautifully along the trail.

From Dharamsala, the next destination in our Mansalu Circuit Itinerary is to cross the Larkya la pass (5213m) and then descend to Bintang. One of the major highlights of the Manaslu Circuit is undoubtedly the crossing of the Larkya La Pass, a formidable challenge that rewards trekkers with breathtaking panoramas. As you ascend towards the pass, the terrain becomes increasingly rugged, with rocky paths and icy slopes testing your endurance. Reaching the summit is a triumphant moment, as you stand amidst a breathtaking expanse of snow-clad peaks, including the majestic Manaslu, the world’s eighth-highest mountain. The descent from the pass is equally exhilarating, offering a different perspective of the surrounding landscape.

The route follows the Budhi Gandaki River, leading you to Bimtang before continuing to Tilije. From Bimtang, you will trek to Dharapani, another picturesque village where you can unwind as your trek concludes. After your time in Dharapani, you will drive to Besisahar, a small market town with numerous bus services connecting to various regions of the country. Your journey back to Kathmandu will be a scenic drive from Besisahar, showcasing lush hills, tranquil waterfalls, and flowing rivers throughout the area. And this is how the Manaslu Circuit Trek itinerary is generally planned. However, we can also commence and conclude the conversely. Similarly, the Manaslu Circuit trek is the best alternative for trekkers who have already been to the Annapurna Circuit. For the trekkers willing to explore more of the off-the-beaten and less explored trails of Nepal, the itinerary to Mansalu Circuit can be extended with an inclusion of the Tsum Valley Trail.

Beyond the physical challenges, the Manaslu Circuit is a spiritual journey. The tranquility of the high mountains and the serene ambiance of Buddhist monasteries create an atmosphere conducive to introspection and personal growth. Encountering prayer flags fluttering in the wind and witnessing monks engaged in their rituals is a profound experience. The region’s rich cultural heritage is evident in its ancient monasteries, stupas, and mani walls, adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant colors.

The trekking trail of Manaslu Circuit is conserved within the Manaslu Conservation Area as well as the Annapurna Conservation Area. Therefore, we will require the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), along with Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Manaslu Special Permit (restricted area permit) for Manaslu Circuit Trek.

The best time to do the Manaslu Circuit is in the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is stable and the trail is clear of snow. During these seasons you will have clear sky, beautiful landscapes and good trekking conditions. However, even during these seasons it’s always good to be prepared for unpredictable weather at higher altitudes. It is not recommended to trek Manaslu Circuit during the monsoon time as the trails are probable of landslide and slipper trail along with other natural calamities. However, if you are highly experienced and willing to experience the adrenaline trekking, it is still worthwhile during monsoon. Whereas, trekking to Mansalu in winter can be complicated due to freezing cold.
