Machhapuchhre Model Trek is a newly familiarized and less-explored trekking route in the Annapurna region of Nepal which was introduced by TAAN (Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal). The trail has been named after the iconic Mt. Machhapuchhre (6,993 meters) which is popular as the “Fishtail Mountain” for its unique shape and is one of the most sacred peaks in Nepal which remains unclimbed by human feet. This amazing, lesser-known walk passes through dense forests, lovely terraced fields and peaceful towns. It’s the perfect option for anybody seeking a more tranquil route away from the bustling tourist attractions while yet taking in Nepal’s famously breathtaking mountain landscapes. For those who enjoy the outdoors, this walk is a must-do because of the diversity of scenery, which includes deep forests and terraced farms.
Even though the Machhapurchhre Model trek is less popular unlike Annapurna Base Camp and other popular treks in the region, it provides an excellent introduction to the Annapurna region trekking. Since the trail is relatively new and less popular, it is quieter and allows us to enjoy the serenity of nature. It’s ideal for trekkers with moderate fitness who want to enjoy both adventure and cultural experiences, all while taking in the awe-inspiring views of Mount Machhapuchhre, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri.
We also get the chance to really enjoy the warm hospitality of the Gurung and Magar communities while gaining a better understanding of their lifestyle and cultural traditions. The itinerary includes trekking through traditional villages, which allows us to interact with the locals and see their vibrant customs and culture up close.
The trek also gives you access to stunning landscapes, including rhododendron forests, terraced fields, and picturesque waterfalls. Along the way, you’ll have numerous opportunities to take in panoramic views of some of Nepal’s highest peaks, including Annapurna, Hiunchuli, and, of course, the towering Machhapuchhre.
The Machhapuchhre Model Trek is a shorter option than other well-known trails in the Annapurna area, usually taking 7 to 10 days. The adventure starts with a flight or drive to Pokhara, followed by a drive to Mardi Pul, the trek’s starting point. From there, we hike through lovely villages like Ghachok, Dhiprang, and Lwang, enjoying terraced fields and green forests. As we ascend, the path reveals breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. The trek’s highest point is Kharka at 3,699m, offering a close look at Mount Machhapuchhre and nearby peaks. Afterward, the trek loops back to Pokhara, where you can unwind by the lake and think about your journey. If you want to change the planned itinerary, Nepal Mountain Guide can adjust it to fit your needs.
Like most treks in the Annapurna region, the Machhapuchhre Model Trek itinerary also covers the trail which is bounded by the Annapurna Conservation Area. Hence, you will need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) for the Machhapuchhre Model Trek. The permit helps preserve the environment and maintain trekking safety along with contribution to the conservation area and protection of the flora and fauna. Our team at Nepal Mountain Guide will handle all the paperwork and ensure you’re ready to start your trek with everything in place.
