Into the wilderness of unexplored off-the-beaten-path, the Lower Dolpo Trek is one of the most remote and isolated trekking destinations in Nepal. Situated in far-western Nepal, the Dolpo region is the largest district of Nepal which is renowned for its rugged landscapes, ancient Tibetan culture, and pristine natural beauty. Dolpo region was delimited to the outside world until the 1980s, which has helped preserve its unique culture and untouched environment.
Nowadays after 1991, the region is allowed to visit for outsiders but only for a limited number of people and following the protocols and obtaining necessary permits. Unlike popular and commercialized trekking trails of Nepal like Everest and Annapurna, the Dolpo region is still mysterious to trekkers. Hence, the trekkers visiting Lower Dolpo get to experience a blend of raw wilderness, spectacular mountain views, and deep spirituality. This trek also offers the chance to explore secluded monasteries, witness yak caravans in motion, and immerse yourself in the ancient traditions of Bon and Buddhism.
In addition to its remoteness, Lower Dolpo is home to Shey Phoksundo National Park, the largest national park in Nepal that was established in 1984. We can spot some rare and extinct wildlife like Tibetan wolves, snow leopards, Himalayan musk deer, blue sheep, and so on within the national park. Besides the flora and fauna in this largest national park of Nepal, it also boasts the breathtaking Shey Phoksundo Lake. In fact, the national park got its name from Shey Monastery and the Phoksundo Lake which abode within the park. The lake’s striking azure waters are framed by towering cliffs and snow-capped peaks, making it an essential highlight of the Lower Dolpo Trek. Some glimpses of the place we traveled during our Lower Dolpo Trek was also presented in the famous movie, “Himalaya – the Caravan”.
Lower Dolpo Trek itinerary is mostly about 12-18 Days depending on the routes, number of acclimatization, the pace of the walk, etc. Nepal Mountain Guide’s Lower Dolpo program begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then a connecting flight to Juphal. From Juphal, the trek officially starts with a walk to Dunai, the district headquarters of Dolpo. The trail proceeds further through terraced fields and small villages that offer a glimpse of local life in this remote region.
From Dunai, our journey in Lower Dolpo trek moves along the Bheri River to the ancient town of Tarakot. The trail then continues to Dho Tarap, a high-altitude village that lies in a stunning valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Dho Tarap is one of the most culturally significant villages in Dolpo, where we can explore monasteries and learn about Tibetan Buddhism and the Bon religion.
One of the major highlights of the Lower Dolpo trek is exploring the Shey Phoksundo Lake, the deepest and one of the most beautiful lakes in Nepal. The turquoise waters of the lake, framed by rocky cliffs and snow-capped mountains create an unforgettable sight. We will spend time exploring the area, visiting nearby Ringmo village, and learning about the local culture.
After visiting Phoksundo Lake, our journey retraces our steps through the remote villages of Shyanta and Chhepka following the trail back to Juphal. The return journey offers more time to soak in the incredible landscapes and enjoy the peace and solitude of this isolated region. From Juphal we will fly back to the city of Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu. If time allows, we can also rest a day at Nepalgunj and explore the life around there. Also, the Lower Dolpo Trek itinerary can be altered according to the specifications and requirements.

This means, it is not allowed to trek without the Restricted Area Permit and a Government licensed guide. These permits help in the preservation of the environment of Lower Dolpo and ensure that the cultural and natural resources of this remote region are protected.
