Overview

Ghandruk is a beautiful village in the Annapurna region of Nepal that is famous for its captivating surroundings and Gurung culture. Due to its enchanting gorgeousness, Ghandruk was also listed on CNN’s “Asia’s 13 best places”. Ghandruk Village at an altitude of 1,940 meters, is one of the largest Gurung settlements in the Annapurna region.

Trekking to Ghandruk has become a popular short and admirable outing in Nepal for both domestic and international tourists. The Ghandruk Trek is an appealing adventure in Nepal offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and convenient trekking trails. The majestic views of the Annapurna range, the cultural richness of Ghandruk village, and the warm hospitality of the Gurung people make the Ghandruk Circuit Trek an unforgettable experience for the trekkers.

Gurung Culture

The major inhabitants of the Ghandruk village are the Gurung people, also known as Tamu. They are one of the major Gurkha tribes as well. Having a rich history and vibrant culture, the Gurung people with their warm hospitality welcome thousands of tourists yearly to the Ghandruk village. Showcasing their bravery and historic achievement along with their lifestyle and culture, the Gurung people ensure that the Ghandruk trekking venture is one of Nepal’s remarkable cultural trekking. There are museums like Old Gurung Museum and Gurung Cultural Museum Ghandruk that exhibit the Gurung history and culture. The museum preserves traditional attire, utensils, and artifacts that tell the story of a rich Gurung heritage. Nevertheless, the Ghandruk village is a living museum in itself.

En Route: Trekking to Ghandruk

Apart from Gurung culture, trekking to Ghandruk is a wonderful voyage with modest hikes offering marvelous sceneries in the Annapurna region of Nepal. The journey commences from Pokhara, like almost all the treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal. En route, we hike thru lush green valleys, terraced fields, picturesque villages, cascading waterfalls, and vibrant rhododendron forests watching natural splendor and mountain panorama in the backdrop.
From Pokhara, there is a diverse range of itineraries and routes to reach Ghandruk Village. Depending upon the preferences and availability of time, a trekker can embark on the trailheads accordingly. The most popular itinerary for Ghandruk Trek is initiating with a short drive to Nayapul and continuing towards Ghandruk village. As the name suggests, the major highlight of the Ghandruk Trek is spending a day in Ghandruk village. Besides the vibrant Gurung culture, mountain panorama and sunrise and sunset views from Ghandruk are equally noteworthy. Passing through the settlements of Landruk and Tolke, the journey concludes at Dhampus or Phedi. But this Ghandruk trek itinerary can be made alternatively as well.

Can I join the Ghandruk Trek?

A travel lover, or just a vacation fanatic can trek to Ghandruk without any restrictions. The trekking trail to Ghandruk is easy and unlike the long and strenuous treks like Annapurna Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit Trek. It is a short and easy trek in the Annapurna region which doesn’t require any previous trekking experience either. However, being physically and emotionally sound is highly preferred for a successful Ghandruk Trek. For time-bounded and incapable people to embark on the trek physically, the Ghandruk Jeep Tour is also promising and an elite choice.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit and TIMs

As the trekking trail to Ghandruk village is also preserved within the Annapurna Conservation Area, we will require the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit to trek in Ghandruk. This is for the protection of flora and fauna in the region and responsible trekking. Similarly, for tracking tourist information and safety purposes, the Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) Card is also required for Ghandruk Trek.

Best time to trek Ghandruk

Planning the best time to trek in Ghandruk is crucial but it can be doable anytime around the year. Yet, for the best experience, the Ghandruk Trek shall be undergone during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. It is for the trekkers willing to experience the best of Ghandruk. These months mostly have the finest weather and the clear vistas of mountains along with modest temperatures for the hike. Whereas, the months of spring are popular for blooming rhododendrons of multiple colors along with vibrant green landscapes, and the autumn months offer clear skies and crisp air along with an opportunity to combine the trek schedule with local festivals. Nevertheless, even winter and spring seasons have their unique charm; we just have to cope with the chilly cold during winter and slippery trails during monsoon.
