Whether you are in search of excitement, tranquility, or a stronger bond with the environment, this trek caters to all. Also known as the Annapurna Sanctuary route, the ABC trekking trail offers breathtaking views of some of the highest peaks in the world including gigantic Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchare – the fishtail mountain. As we trek higher in the Annapurna region, these massifs along with their neighboring peaks appear closer and more magnificent which provides a dramatic backdrop during our journey. Each trekking day of the Annapurna Base Camp trek brings new scenery for us to rejoice in; diverging from rhododendron forests in full bloom to bamboo groves and high-altitude deserts. This diversity of the Annapurna region makes the ABC Trek a visual feast for trekkers.
The Annapurna region is home to various ethnic groups of Nepal. Among which, the major indigenous inhabitants are Gurung and Magar in the south, while Thakali, Manange, and Loba are prevalent in the north. During our ABC trek, we will traverse through traditional villages like Chhomrong, Bamboo, Deurali, Tadapani, and Ghorepani where we can have the opportunity to get an insight into the lifestyle and culture of the locals. The warm hospitality of the people and their unique cultural dimension add more charm to our Annapurna trekking venture besides its natural grandeur. We will get to discover Buddhist monuments, Gumbas, and immerse ourselves in the serenity of the local lifestyles and culture.
Pokhara, the city of Lakes, is the gateway to all treks in the Annapurna region. Our Annapurna Base Camp Trek commences with a flight or drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, which is a popular tourist destination in Nepal itself. The trekking to ABC typically starts at Nayapul which is a short drive from Pokhara of about 1 and half hours. From Nayapul, our official Annapurna Base Camp Trekking journey will start as we ascend through terraced fields and traditional villages.
The trail follows the Modi Khola River, providing a gentle introduction to the trek. Walking through lush bushes, traditional settlements, Marshyangdi river bank, crossing suspension bridges, and sighting the eye-dazzling panoramas of mountain ranges, we will step foot at our ultimate destination of the trip i.e. Annapurna Base Camp situated at an altitude of 4,130 meters. While making our way toward ABC, we will be staying in several tea houses and local villages devouring the typical Nepali meals to re-energize us.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trekking trail abodes within the Annapurna Conservation Area, which was established in 1986 and is rich in biodiversity. It is the first and the largest conservation area in Nepal which extends over an area of 7,629 sq. km. The Annapurna Conservation area is home to some of the rare and extinct wildlife like Himalayan Thar, and Langur monkeys, along with various reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and bird species. It abodes the forests that are filled with colorful flowers, including orchids and rhododendrons which bloom especially during the spring season. Hence, trekking through the Annapurna Base camp trail is a paradise for nature lovers.
Being located in the Annapurna Conservation Area, a trekker will require two permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card to trek to the Annapurna Base Camp. These can be acquired in Pokhara or Kathmandu via a registered trekking operator like Nepal Mountain Guide. And though it is not mandatory to have a trekking guide for trekking to Annapurna Base Camp, hiring a local guide and porter can enhance your trekking experience. A porter can help carry your burden so you may enjoy the walk more comfortably, while a guide can offer insightful information about the local way of life and culture. On the other hand, it will contribute to the economy of Nepal by providing employment opportunities to the locals. Tourism is a major source of income in the Annapurna Region after agriculture. Therefore, we recommend trekking to ABC with our highly experienced and licensed trekking guide and our local porters.
Trekking to Annapurna Base Camp is suitable for beginners as well as for veterans. However, it is important to consider posing a good level of fitness before embarking on ABC Trek. Therefore, regular exercise which includes cardio and strength training is recommended to be prepared for the ABC trekking. It is also advisable to go for short hikes in your locality before going for Annapurna Base Camp Trek.
Considering a good time for planning the ABC Trek is very crucial. And the best time to undertake the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is during the spring season (March to May) and autumn season (September to November). During the Spring and Autumn months, the weather is stable in Nepal and the skies are clear which offers better views of the mountains. Whereas, the temperature is also moderate which makes it comfortable for trekking. However, for the experienced trekkers, trekking to ABC during monsoon is also an amazing experience but of course, there will be many obstacles due to rainfall, slippery trails, landslides, and so on. And during the winter, the views are obscured as well as it is too chilly to trek to Annapurna Base Camp. Contact Nepal Mountain Guide today to plan the ABC trekking adventure with our highly experienced crew for a remarkable journey.
